President Elect Barack Obama Victory Speech

Barack Obama's election night address from Grant Park in his home city of Chicago:

Virginia equals Obama win. North Carolina equals Obama landslide.

From The Huffington Post

Here is a handy dandy guide to watching election night. The East Coast states will report first. If John McCain is going to win, then he will win Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. And then it will take the rest of the night to figure out if he still has enough electoral votes. Obama's victory could be a lot easier to figure out.

If Obama wins Virginia - it's over. That simple. ...

Barack Obama: Closing Argument (Full Speech)

Canton Memorial Civic Center, Canton, Ohio
1:17 P.M. EDT, Monday, OCTOBER 27, 2008

One week. One week.

After decades of broken politics in Washington, eight years of failed policies from George Bush and twenty-one months of a campaign that has taken us from the rocky coast of Maine to the sunshine of California and everywhere in between, we are one week away from changing America.

In one week, you can turn the page on policies that have put greed and irresponsibility of Wall Street before the hard work and sacrifice of folks right here in Canton, folks right on Main Street.

In one week, you can choose. You can choose policies that invest in our middle-class and create new jobs and grow this economy from the bottom-up, so that everyone has a chance to succeed, from the CEO to the secretary and the janitor, from the factory owner to the men and women on the factory floor. In one week.

In one week, you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation, just to win an election; that tries to pit region against region and city against town, Republican against Democrat; that asks us to fear at a time when we need hope. In one week, at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need. You can do that.

A Modest Proposal for Healthcare Reform

Sadly, it appears that the Republicans have successfully "starved the beast". The phrase refers to the Republican strategy of cutting the revenue stream (taxes) to the Federal government so the government can not afford new social programs. Why Americans would vote for politicians who refer to our government as a "beast" and actively campaign to destroy it is beyond me and is a topic for another time. Today, the economic crisis created by deregulation of the financial services industry and an unjustified trust in free markets whose only goal is short-term profit has left the next President severely handicapped. There is now intense pressure on the revenue stream because of the nationalization of the banking industry (I never thought I would write that), endless spending on a war of choice in Iraq, and economic depression that will require additional spending to assist individuals and local governments. It will be difficult to nearly impossible to pass any meaningful healthcare reforms if it involves federal spending.
